Founded by a friar
Santa Clara University’s foundations go back to 1777 when a Spanish friar founded the Santa Clara church in a chain of missions in Alta California. This would be the site of the future university. In 1851, the original College of Santa Clara was established around the Mission Santa Clara de Asis. The college awarded the first bachelor’s degree in California in 1857, and was established as a university in 1912 with the addition of the School of Engineering and the School of Law. The university has a population of about 5000 undergraduates and 3500 masters, J.D., and Ph.D students. Santa Clara University maintains its Catholic and Jesuit affiliation and supports numerous initiatives for its religious mission. Students are invited to attend Sunday evening student masses in the mission church and are encouraged to participate in campus ministry programs and lectures. As part of the academic core, bachelor’s degrees require three religious studies courses.
