The San Jose Earthquakes can trace their roots back to 1974 when the North American Soccer League awarded a franchise to San Jose and called them the Earthquakes. After the 1984 season, the North American Soccer League folded, and the Earthquakes played in the Western Soccer League from 1985-1988. In 1989, the team entered the Western Soccer League as the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks. They played until the end of the 1993 season. Then, in 1994, the team joined Major League Soccer. The team returned to the name “Earthquakes” at the end of 1999. In 2006, they moved to Houston, but returned to San Jose for the 2008 season.

There are plans to build a new stadium on a site near the San Jose International Airport on the site of the former FMC plant. It is projected to open in 2011 or 2012.

The main rivalry of the San Jose Earthquakes are the Los Angeles Galaxy. Each season they compete in the California Clasico. There is also a rivalry growing between the San Jose Earthquakes and the Houston Dynamo, which was created from the players and coach of the Earthquakes franchise who were moved from San Jose to Houston in 2005.
