A step back in time
The San Jose State University was founded by the California legislature in 1862 as the California State Normal School as a city-funded normal school. The campus was relocated to San Jose from San Francisco in 1871 where it is currently located. In 1881, the first branch of he California State Normal School was announced, which would later become the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). At this time, a giant bell was made with an inscription of the date of the university’s inception. It is still found on the SJSU campus, and is where many student traditions take place. Explore the campus

It is bordered by San Fernando Street, Fourth Street, San Salvador Street, and Tenth Street. The original wooden buildings were destroyed by a fire in 1880 and was replaced by masonry structures in 1881. More recently, a new housing complex was completed to replace the old residence halls in 2005. San Jose University offers two campus tours for prospective students and their families at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is also an admission presentation at 12:30 on Fridays in the Boccardo Business Center. You will have to register for campus tours online and you will receive an email confirmation.
Campus sports
San Jose University has participated in athletics since its first baseball team was established in 1890. The team is called the Spartans in the Western Athletic Conference in NCAA Division I. They won titles in track and field, golf, and boxing.
