After the war was over, the 170 acre dump was nearly forgotten until a group of caring neighbors began to beautify the area with grass, trees, shrubs and other flora. By 1973 the state legislature recognized the areas potential and set aside nearly $10 million to purchase the land and turn it into a public recreational area. In 1977 the state of California voted the Candlestick Point Recreational Area as the first urban recreation park, giving birth to one of the most popular natural attractions in the state! Once youve parked your San Francisco car rental expect to find a wide variety of activities within the park including windsurfing, hiking, jogging and biking. The Origins of the Name Candlestick Point

Candlestick Point State Recreation Area offers a variety of unique features, one of which being the parks name. This moniker dates way back to pioneer times, when settlers were just beginning to populate what is now known as the San Francisco and Bay Area. Wooden ships could often been seen off the point as they traveled to and from surround arrays, navigating the unfamiliar channels. It wasnt uncommon for some of these ships to catch on fire during their commutes, creating fantastic and fiery displays out on the water. Candlestick Points name was derived from the last section seen on a burning ship before it completely sunk into the water, which often resembled a candlestick.
