San Francisco Car Rentals and The Cannery at Del Monte Square
The Cannery at Del Monte Square is one of San Francisco's favorite destinations. Originally built in 1907 overlooking the San Francisco Bay, this was the site of a large peach cannery. It is located at the end of Fisherman's Wharf, one of the most popular destinations you can visit with your San Francisco car rental. Today, it is a waterfront marketplace with many original shops, restaurants, and offices. There is also live entertainment and a world-class jazz club found here as well. It is also minutes away from the Maritime Museum, Alcatraz, Coit Tower, and the cable car lines with your San Francisco car rental.
European Charm with American Modernity
The Cannery is three levels of stores and offices built on winding walkways, balconies, and bridges around a courtyard. In the courtyard you can find 130-year-old olive trees and several outdoor cafes to relax in. The location was chosen after the 1906 earthquake because the location was ideal for bringing in fresh produce from the agricultural areas around San Francisco, then shipping it out on ships that were docked outside the cannery.
In 1963, the factory was purchased from the Del Monty company just before it was about to be torn down. It was transformed into "a place for people to detach themselves from everyday hustle and bustle, in an environment reminiscent of the romantic marketplaces of Europe".
When the Cannery opened in 1966, the architecture inside was beautiful. From the moment you see the original sign on the outside with your San Francisco car rental you will be awe-struck at this piece of history. The old iron tie bolts can still be seen reinforcing the building from the exterior, while the interior has a 14th century Moorish ceiling and a 17th century Long Hall commissioned by King James I. Magnola trees are planted in the central corridor, with evergreen flowering pear trees as well. The courtyard was created from the railroad siding and platform that was between the Del Monte Cannery and the Haslett Warehouse.
