Start from San Francisco and drive east across the Bay and on Interstate 205 (I-205) to the central valley agricultural center of California. Head South out of San Francisco with your car hire on 19th Avenue/California 1. You will follow the twists and turns to Montara State Beach and then proceed to Half Moon Bay. Continue South on I-280 to San Jose.

Follow I-580 and I-680 North to Danville (Diablo Rd. Exit to Danville Blvd.).

Back on the main route, proceed on I-680 to Walnut Creek city.
Sights to see:
- John Muir National Historic Site (4202 Alabama Ave.)
From Walnut Creek, continue driving your car hire west on California 24 for approximately 30 miles to the College Avenue exit. Turn right and head into Berkeley.
Sights to see:
- University of California at Berkeley (East of Oxford St. between Bancroft Way and Hearst St.).
Backtrack to California 24 and continue driving your car hire west to Oakland. At I-580 go southeast to the Grand Avenue exit and take the second right onto Lakeshore Avenue. Follow Lakeshore Avenue around Lake Merritt and turn right on Twelfth Street to the Oakland Museum of California.
