The original St. Josephs Church of San Jose was built on the site of the current basilica in 1803. It was the first non-mission parish built in all of California. Unfortunately, this original adobe suffered sever structure damage during the earthquakes of 1818 and 1822. A new church was later constructed between 1835 and 1846. Two decades later, the second church of St. Joseph was virtually destroyed when another violent earthquake shook San Jose. A third church would also be lost, this time to fire. A temporary church was opened during the weeks after the fire as a five and final church was rebuilt on the original site. This church was dedicated by Joseph Alemany, Archbishop of San Francisco in 1877. The beautiful portico and dome were later added to the cathedral during the late 1880s. This resilient church has stood the testament of time, as has the faith of the City of San Jose.
