Recently renovated and fully restored for public use, the historic City Hall building was recently crowned the Worlds Largest Base-Isolated Building earning itself a spot at the top of numerous historical registers and international art archives. Built in 1913 as the citys 6th seat of seat of city government, the current City Hall has survived numerous clashes with nature to maintain its coveted spot at the top of the Beaux Arts architectural wonders of the world! Open to the public Monday through Friday from 8am to 8pm, the City Hall structure is one of San Frans most highly recommended tourist attractions, so dont forget to drop by during your upcoming trip for an exciting behind-the-scenes look at the political life of San Francisco!

A Brief History

On April 15th, 1913 San Francisco Mayor Sunny Jim Rolph was the first to break ground on the citys newest town hall. Designed as the replacement structure for the previously devastated structure (the 1906 earthquake completely crumbled it), the new City Hall was one of engineering genius, costing the city a staggering $3.5 million to erect. Unlike previous buildings, this structure was designed to withstand some of the areas heaviest earthquake activity a claim that wouldnt be tested until the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989! Surprisingly enough the structure was able to withstand most of the quakes sizeable seismic activity, but enough structural damage had occurred to warrant shutting the building down in 1995. The building has since then remained closed to the public as construction crews undertook the tedious task of restoring City Hall to its original glory. Restoration to the buildings dome and base structures would cost nearly $293 million and took just over three years to complete. The project, which consisted of both cosmetic and structural up-dates including the addition of 530 Lead-Rubber Isolators, which are designed to help protect it from the shock of another big earthquake.

Architectural Details
