San Francisco Car Rentals and the De Young Museum
The de Young Museum was founded in 1895 in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. In October 2005 the museum relocated to a new state-of-the-art facility that integrates art, architecture, and the natural landscape in a world-class destination for you to visit with your San Francisco car rental. The museum showcases American art from the 17th through 20th centuries, as well as native American art and collections from Africa and the Pacific.
The new location for the museum is made of warm, natural materials to compliment the surrounding. The copper facade was chosen to replicate the impression made by light filtering through a forest that fits in perfectly with the tree-filled park that is near the museum. Over time the copper will oxidize and blend into the natural environment. Outside the museum there is a public sculpture garden and terrace. The new landscape keeps the feel of the old de Young location - including the sphinx sculptures, the Pool of Enchantment, and the original palm trees and other plants.
Seen and Heard
Once you arrive at the museum with your San Francisco car rental you can explore the museum on your own or take a tour. There are audio tours of the permanent collection by Antenna Audio. It was designed with the museums curators to enhance your visit as you explore at your own pace. There are also public tours at regularly scheduled times which are on a drop-in basis. The tour is covered with your admission to the museum.
If you come with a large group in your San Francisco car rental, a private tour can be arranged with a private docent. They will take you through the permanent collections or special exhibitions. Four weeks notice is required for these tours.
