San Francisco Car Rentals and The Great American Music Hall
The Great American Music Hall is San Francisco's oldest nightclub. One look at the inside of this building will take you back in time. The first things you will notice when you walk in after leaving your San Francisco car rental in the parking lot are the beautifully decorated balconies, tall marble columns, and the ceiling frescoes. This 5000-square-foot concert hall was a symbol of renewal and optimism when it opened in 1907 and today it still represents that feeling. However, it has been updated with professional sound and lighting systems, full bars, a modern kitchen, and a spacious oak dance floor. Old and new come together beautifully at The Great American Music Hall.
From Devastation to Beauty
In 1906 there was a devastating earthquake in San Francisco that struck the city in the early morning hours. Not only was it strong in magnitude, but the resulting fires would also damage much of the city. In 1907 a French architect designed the building and a political figure, Chris Buckley, supported the idea in order to restart the building after the earthquake. The result, which you can see with your San Francisco car rental, is one of the most popular entertainment spots in San Francisco history, especially during the Barbary Coast Era. Until the Great Depression really hit the area hard in 1933, fine food, gambling, and women were always found here and readily available. In 1936, The Great American Music Hall was again rejuvenated when Sally Rand again brought life to the building , with dances lasting all night long for over a decade.
After the Second World War, the club reopened as a jazz club in 1948, but it was taken over in the 1950s by members of Moose Lodge. The building went into a long decline that nearly brought down the building in the early 1970s. However, it was saved at the last minute when a French restaurant took over the building. That was short-lived, with the Great American Music Hall opened in 1972. Since then some of the biggest names in music have performed here. Performers have included Duke Ellington, Van Morrison, and the Grateful Dead.
