Los Angeles Film Overview
Los Angeles has long be synonymous with movie stars and big-ticket actors. The City of Angels is overflowing with starlets and leading men, as well as directors, producers and writers. If ever there was a city known for film, this is it! From the megaplexes catering to high-budget blockbuster flicks, to indie documentaries and film festival entries, there's always something showing in LA. If you're a fan of the cinema, but crave something that's a little left of center, don't worry – Super Cheap has all the information you need to find a great independent movie during your upcoming LAX car rental vacation.
Find yourself at a film festival
One of the best ways to explore the cinematic side of Los Angeles is at one of the many local film festivals. In addition to the American Film Institute's yearly celebration, there's the Film Independent’s Los Angeles Film Festival, which features new American indie films, short films and and music videos. The festival spans a week during late June. LAX car rental travelers can also catch the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, also known as Outfest, during the month of July. This is now Los Angeles' largest film festival, attracting some 32,000 audience members annually.
Get educated at the American Cinematheque
The American Cinematheque has been promoting moving pictures as the country's art form for decades. LAX car rental travelers can catch obscure and rare screenings at this educational institution, which is currently located inside the historic Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. The American Cinematheque often hosts film events, and has featured themed nights in the past. Most events that highlight a specific individual are usually accompanied by at least one in-theater audience question and answer session with the honoree.
Theaters worth checking out
There are dozens of great movie theaters located in the city of Los Angeles, many with unique screening schedules and exciting film events. The Leo S. Bing Theater at the LA County Museum, for example, presents a themed film series each month. Subjects have ranged from Cold War propaganda films to movies that starred blonde bombshells from the 1930s. LAX car rental travelers can catch a variety of independent art films at the Laemmie's Sunset 5, which is located on Sunset Boulevard. The Nuart Theatre in Santa Monica is the place to be if you like older films. Each week, the theater's curator digs deep into the archives in order to screen cult classics from across all genres. LAX car rental travelers can often participate in question and answer sessions with stars and filmmakers during special event screenings. And yes, they still show the Rocky Horror Picture Show every Saturday night at midnight.
Cinema at the cemeterys
Summers just got a bit spookier in Los Angeles , thanks to the the Hollywood Forever Cemetery's weekly outdoor screenings. Every Saturday night, LAX car rental travelers can set out their lawn chairs and enjoy civilized screenings of rarely seen movie classics, which are projected against the cemetery's massive mausoleum wall. Parking is free within the cemetery, and admission is a nominal $10 donation. The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is located at 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard, between Gower Street and Van Ness Avenue.
