A Quick History

The Los Angeles Lakers began their basketball legacy back in 1960 after relocating to the West Coast from Minneapolis where they were the NBAs first dynasty worthy team, winning championships in 1949, 1950, 1952, 1953 and 1954. After the team relocated to LA they acquired a myriad of talented players including Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain, al of whom would go on to claim a coveted spot in the NBA Hall of Fame. Surprisingly, the team was unable to post a championship title win until1972, losing six championship trophies to their arch rivals the Boston Celtics. In the years that followed the LA Lakers would continue to acquire priceless players including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Earvin Magic Johnson and Coach Pat Riley. After winning the 1979 championship title over the Philadelphia 76ers, the Lakers would go on to dominate much of the 1980s, appearing in the final match up eight times that decade! The LA Lakers would quickly fade under the encompassing shadow of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls during the 1990s, re-appearing in the 1999-2000 season as a top notch contender. The thrilling threesome of Kobe Bryant, Shaquille ONeal and Phil Jackson would prove to be a winning combination winning three consecutive and countless league awards. The Lakers are currently rebounding from a devastating 2004-2005 season, but theres plenty of reason to be optimistic this year, thanks to the return of Coach Phil Jackson and outstanding skill of Kobes offensive game.
