Museum of the City San Francisco
The Museum of the City of San Francisco is museum that is operated by the San Francisco Historical Society at Pier 45 and the San Francisco City Hall. This is a museum that is devoted to the city’s history, including photos, town plans, paintings, and objects of civil interest. The museum has exhibits specifically geared to the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, the gold rush, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

They are open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. They are closed on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. City history
The museum is here to help you learn about the history of the city when you are here with your San Francisco rental car. The earliest inhabitants of the area date back to 3000 BC. People of the Ohlone language group occupied the area from the 6th century. The territory was claimed by Spain in the early 16th century, but had little contact with Europeans until 1769. They gained independence from Spain in 1821 and became part of Mexico. Under Mexican rule, the mission system ended and the lands were privatized. Mexico ceded the territory after the Mexican-American War. The California Gold Rush brought many to the area. Entrepreneurs began to come to the area and capitalize on the wealth of the Gold Rush. The earthquake that took place on April 18, 1906 was a major event that took place in the city. San Francisco came back as a stronger city. During the Great Depression, not a single San Francisco-based bank failed. The Rock
