The Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo is a place for kids to think, create, and play. It is home to more than 50 exotic and native animals, many of which are brought into classrooms are part of the science outreach program. The museum was opened in 1934 as the first children's museum to open west of the Mississippi. It has been a leader in children's science education since it opened. In 1969, a zoo was also added.

The area is typically cool and wet in the winter and warm and dry in the summer.
