Go Back... Go Way Back
There is a great history behind this port and it begins with the fact that San Pedro Bay used to be a shallow mudflat. This mudflat was way to soft and delicate to be able to support a wharf so people who came along in their boats could either anchor them far out and send their goods to shore on a ferry, or they could simply beach themselves. Discount car rental customers might be interested to know that shipping goods to land was tremendously improved by a man named Phineas Banning. Banning searched the channel that led to Wilmington to 10 feet deep, back in 1871. The year that this occurred, the port handled 50,000 tons of shipping. Eventually, Banning built a railway that connected San Pedro Bay and Los Angeles and after his death, Banning's sons continued to promote this amazing port. The year his sons worked on the port, it handled a massive 500,000 tons of shipping. Breakwater construction started in 1899, with the support of the US government, and the Harbor Commission was finally founded in 1907.
