Discount Car Rentals and the Port of Los Angeles

On your upcoming discount car rental vacation, why not visit a place with history and excitement? Visit a place that is the largest cruise ship center on the West Coast of the United States. This place transports over 1 million passengers every year. This cruise center is also known to be one of the safest and securest cruise passenger complexes out there. What are we talking about? What place is so great that you would certainly want to visit it on your future discount car rental trip? The Port of Los Angeles, located on San Pedro Bay, is also called the Los Angeles Harbor. This port connects the separate port of Long Beach. The Port of Los Angeles takes up about 7,500 acres of water and land along a whopping 43 miles of riverside. There is something for everyone to enjoy at the Port of Los Angeles.

Go Back... Go Way Back

There is a great history behind this port and it begins with the fact that San Pedro Bay used to be a shallow mudflat. This mudflat was way to soft and delicate to be able to support a wharf so people who came along in their boats could either anchor them far out and send their goods to shore on a ferry, or they could simply beach themselves. Discount car rental customers might be interested to know that shipping goods to land was tremendously improved by a man named Phineas Banning. Banning searched the channel that led to Wilmington to 10 feet deep, back in 1871. The year that this occurred, the port handled 50,000 tons of shipping. Eventually, Banning built a railway that connected San Pedro Bay and Los Angeles and after his death, Banning's sons continued to promote this amazing port. The year his sons worked on the port, it handled a massive 500,000 tons of shipping. Breakwater construction started in 1899, with the support of the US government, and the Harbor Commission was finally founded in 1907. Visit the Port of LA, discount car rental customers, there is more history involved than you could ever imagine.

Everyone loves Lobster

One of the port's annual events is the Lobster Festival. People come from around the world just to partake in the activities and to taste the greatest lobster ever cooked. This is the world's largest lobster festival and it offers 22,000 meals that cost only $17. Admission to the event is free, so there is no excuse not to go! After you have finished dining on your delicious meal, you can enjoy dancing, a pirate camp, street performers, tall ships and music from some great artists. Past performers at the Lobster Festival have included Jason Mraz, The Young Dubliners and Tristan Prettyman. The Lobster Festival offers a great scenic outdoor park and many shops along the way. What a great event to participate in and have some fun.

Spend a Day Relaxing on the Beach

The Port of Los Angeles has one of the best beaches around, discount car rental customers. The Cabrillo Beach covers 370 acres and is a very popular area for swimming, fishing and going on a boat ride. Far out in the water, there is a perfect area for those who just want to catch some seafood for their meal later that night. At this recreational facility, there is also a sports complex that provides camping and aquatics and encourages physical fitness. There is also a marina and a marine aquarium that is very popular for viewing. Admission to the aquarium is free, but there is a suggested donation of $5 for adults and $1 for children. The Port of Los Angeles has so many activities to choose from, it's impossible to be bored. Visit the Port of LA for a fun-filled family adventure.
