San Francisco Rent a Car and Potrero Hill
The sunny neighborhood Potrero Hill is located in the eastern part of San Francisco, east of the Mission Distric and south of the South Market area. Its borders include 16th Street to the north and Potrero Avenue. Built mainly on top of a landfill, the eastern side of this neighborhood is lined with docks. Potrero Hill is probably best well known as the neighborhood in where the San Francisco fog lifts first allowing people to see the heart of San Franciscos skyline with the magnificent backdrop of the blue sky still in the midst of the fog. Although it is most beautiful in the daytime, car rentals San Francisco suggests visitors to be a little more wary in the evening as the streets of Potrero Hill can get deserted fairly quickly. Potrero Hill has a long list of famous people who currently reside or had previously resided in this neighborhood. This included the famous star football player OJ Simpson of the Buffalo Bills. Wayne Thiebaud, a famous and prominent painter resided in the neighborhood as well as painting parts of the neighborhood for several years. Potrero Hill is also the location of City Lights, Americas first all-paperback bookstore co-founded by Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
San Francisco Car Rentals and the History of Potrero Hill
The history of the Potrero Hill neighborhood can be traced all the way back 1835 to a land grant for Don Francisco de Haro. The origin of Potrero Hill actually comes from the lands for use, potrero neuvo meaning new pasture, as Don Francisco de Haro first used it as a grazing field for his cattle. Eventually, the grazing area began to be pushed back by the gold rush squatters which would only be the beginning of what would be a long history of immigration. The area was mostly industrial with several manufacturing companies, such as U.S. Steel, the Union Iron Works, and the Western Sugar Refinery. However, later on in the 1990s housing and offices began to appear in place of the factories and warehouses. The community is actually pretty diverse. Starting in the 1860s with the Scots, followed by the Chinese, Russians, Mexicans and finally African-American Southerners in the 1940s the different ethnicities all began to reside on Potrero Hill. The residential area that was built is what is today is the neighborhood of Potrero Hill.
