Car Rental in California and a Road Trip to Palm Springs

Palm Springs is the famous desert resort city located about two hours east of Los Angeles with your car rental in California. Here you will find some of the most famous golf courses in the country, as well as swimming, tennis, horseback riding, and hiking on the nearby mountains.

Set down roots

Palm Springs was once home to several Native American groups, but the addition of a railroad changed the landscape. The natives were pushed to reserves, while the railroad company was encouraged to develop. From the 1930s to the 1970s the area was home to some of Hollywood’s most glamorous stars. Many celebrities had homes in Palm Springs, giving it the title “Playground of the Stars”. Today celebrities still come to relax, but the city’s economy is based on tourism, hospitality, and gambling.

Climb high

Leave your car rental in California behind and climb high into the mountains. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway will bring you from the Coachella Valley floor to the top of San Jacinto Peak. Before construction of the tram, the only way to get there was by hiking several hours from Idylwild. The tram takes you from the station at the bottom through North America’s sheerest mountain face passes. When you get to the mountain station at 8516 feet above sea level you are almost at the peak. When you get off the tram you are in the wilderness of Long Valley and Mount San Jacinto State Park. There are nature walks, a burro ride, or even play in the snow in the winter. If you would like to go back-country hiking, you will require a permit from the U.S. Forest Service. There are also two restaurants up here, so enjoy the view and have a great lunch. On a clear day you can see all the way to Mount Charleston in Las Vegas!

Take in a show

The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies is a vaudeville revue in the Plaza Theater. When you visit with your car rental in California, you will celebrate the music, dance, and comedy of the 30s and 40s. The entire cast is over the age of 55, making this unlike any other show you have seen.

Golf your heart out

Palm Springs is sometimes called the “golf capital of the world”, so when you visit with your car rental in California you may want to try one of the more than 100 courses in the area. Some of them are known among the most beautiful courses in the world, but if you watch golf on television, you may already know that!

There is much to keep you busy when you visit Palm Springs with your car rental in California. From the area’s natural beauty to golf to other family attractions, you will have a great time in this former playground to the stars.
