The Cable Car Today
San Francisco currently employs two different kinds of cable cars. These are the California St. cars and the Powell St. cars. The California St. cars have 2 grips and are double open ended. This type of car has been used on California Street since way back in 1891. The Powell St. cars have just one grip and one open end. This type of car was developed in the 1880'2 for the Market Street Cable Railway. Ferries and Cliff House Railway began service on the Powell Mason line during 1888. Some of these original cars have been rebuilt and are still in use today. You and your discount car rental friends can still take a ride on one of the city's three cable car lines. These include the Powell-Hyde line, the Powell-Mason line and the California line.
