The Star System

As defined by Travelnow.com, the star system puts San Francisco hotels into different categories to allow you to choose the best one for you. Hotels with one star are usually much more inexpensive than are hotels with greater amounts of stars, however, one star hotels might not feature all of the amenities that you desire. When planning your trip, it is important to explore all of the San Francisco hotels to find one that is right for your budget and your other needs.
  • One Star - Hotels that have been given one star are economy properties that are typically four to six stories high. Because of their small properties, one star hotels usually have a personal atmosphere and are convenient for traveling and tourist needs. Expect furnished rooms with bathrooms that are clean and basic, but which get the job done if you're not to particular. One star hotels do not generally have a restaurant on site. Examples of such economy properties include Econolodge and Motel 6.
  • Two Star - Hotels that have been given two stars are moderate properties that are typically independent and name brand chains with a reputation for consistency and quality amenities and accommodations. These hotels are medium in size and generally include telephones and televisions in each bedroom. Limited restaurant service may be provided, however, room and bellhop services are usually not available. Examples of such moderate properties include Days Inn and LaQuinta Inn.
  • Three Star - Hotels that have been given a three star rating are first class hotels with more spacious, nicely decorated rooms and well-appointed lobbies. Medium-sized restaurants can usually be found on the property and room service, valet parking, fitness centers, and pools, may be available depending on each individual hotel. Examples of such first class properties include the holiday Inn and Hilton hotels.
  • Four Star - Hotels that have been give four stars are superior hotels with above average service and well-furnished rooms and guest areas. Such properties are usually more large and formal than other first class hotels and will often offer continental breakfast as an added bonus. Room service, valet parking, concierge services, fitness centers, and at least one pool are usually available for guests. Examples of such superior properties include the Hyatt and Marriott hotels.
  • Five Star - Hotels that have been awarded a prestigious five stars are deluxe hotels that provide guests with the ultimate in accommodation and service. Such properties can either be large hotels or small, intimate hotels with elegant atmospheres. Amenities may include luxurious linens, VCR's, CD players, Jacuzzi tubs, heated pools, 24-hour room service, concierge service, fitness centers, up to three pools, and valet parking. Examples of such deluxe properties include the Ritz Carlton and Four seasons hotels.
