And who could forget the parade! San Francisco Pride is home to one of the world's largest Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual parades, providing this minority community with an arena to celebrate their lifestyle. San Francisco car rental travelers come from all over to take part in this unique event, so why not check it out yourself? You don't have to be a member of the LGBT community to take part, so please feel free to come out and take in the action.
About the parade
The parade is, without a doubt, the most important part of San Francisco Pride. It's where everyone comes together and shows their support for the LGBT community - with an artistic flare. Each year, the parade has a theme that all participants must partake in. The 2008 theme was United by Pride, Bound for Equality. Each entry into the parade must openly display this value, mixing politics with art in a peaceful-protest showcase. Customers of Super Cheap Car Rental are welcome to participate in the parade. Please note that all parade participants must register prior to the parade weekend. The parade route begins on Market and Beale and proceeds west on Market to Eighth. The parade kicks-off promptly at 10:20am each year.
Highlights of the festival
The entire month of June is dedicated to LGBT celebrations in San Francisco, so expect to see plenty of rainbow coloured flags fluttering while you drive you San Francisco rental car through town. Every year, more than 500 flags are hoisted along the length of Market Street, inviting San Francisco car rental travelers with open arms. Throughout the month, events like the International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and the Queer Arts Festival provide visitors with endless opportunities for alternative entertainment. The crescendo comes during the last weekend in June when the Civic Center welcomes more than 50,000 visitors to the Pride Festival.
The Pink Brick
San Francisco Pride is more than just a great big party however. There are also political points to be made, as is apparent with the Pink Brick campaign. Awarded each year during the festival, the Pink Brick is presented to a person or institute which has done significant harm to the interests of LGBT people. This person is selected by a public vote prior to the festivals kickoff. The faux award is in the shape of a brick and symbolizes the first brick hurled at the Stonewall Rebellion on June 27, 1969. Customers of Super Cheap San Francisco Car Rental may be shocked to learn that past Pink Brick recipients have included President George W. Bush, CA Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Senator Diane Feinstein.
