San Francisco Car Rentals and the San Francisco Zoo
The San Francisco Zoo is Northern California's largest zoological park and conservation area. This is not only a great place to visit with your San Francisco car rental when you are visiting the area with kids, but it is also a great place for adults to visit. A day in the sun strolling around looking at the animals is fun and gives you a chance to get a little exercise. Located within the city along the Pacific Ocean, the climate is agreeable for you and the 250 species found in their naturalistic surroundings here. Whether you want to see the monkeys, the lions, the hippos, or some of the other animals, the zoo is always a fun place to visit with your San Francisco car rental.
The New Zoo: Conservation
The New San Francisco Zoo is dedicated to conservation of the species that reside there. Their goal is to "foster respect and appreciation of wildlife and provide enlightening and awe-inspiring experiences for all ages". With the new facilities they have recently added (a new entrance, new visitor amenities, a restored carousel, artwork, and a new exhibit with some of the most incredible animals on earth), you will feel like you are experiencing the zoo again for the first time, even if you have visited it before. With your San Francisco car rental come down and see what the new zoo has to offer you.
Step Into the African Savanna
In May 2004, the new African Savanna exhibit opened. This exciting exhibit features giraffe, zebra, kudu, ostrich, and other wildlife roaming together on a 3-acre habitat. You can learn some interesting facts by talking to the employees there. For example, did you know the zebra actually has brown and white stripes, not block stripes? From far away their color looks black, but it is in fact brown. There is so much to learn here with your San Francisco car rental.
Another fun exhibit to see is the Lipman Family Lemur Forest, which opened in the summer of 2002. When you step into the forest you will find five different species of primates from Madagascar in this outdoor setting. Here you can also take a break at the Leaping Lemur Caf for a bite to eat and a place to cool down. You'll be ready to continue your trip through the zoo to see the rest of the exciting animals. The New Zoo believes in interaction and activity to lead to conservation. By caring for animals people can care for wildlife.
Bear-ly Beginning
While you are visiting the zoo with your San Francisco car rental you may learn a little about the history of the zoo. The zoo began more than 72 years ago when one man started the zoo - with one bear. That man was Herbert Fleishhacker, a San Francisco banker and president of the Park Commission. He believed that no major city should be without the cultural benefits of a local zoo. The first animals that lived at the "zoo" remained in Golden Gate Park, but once the idea of bigger and more exotic animals for the zoo came up, it was agreed that they would require special housing and care, and the zoo moved to its current vacation. The zoo grew during the 1930s with the depression-era Works Progress Administration. These structures were designed to house the animals and birds in close quarters, such as would be found in the wild and resembling native habitats. These spacious, yet moated enclosures were among the first bar-less exhibits in the country.
The San Francisco zoo is a great place for young and old to visit with your San Francisco car rental. There is something for everybody to see here, and everybody will have fond memories of the animals you saw there.
