San Jose is the third-largest city in California, and has been the "Safest Big City in America" for the past several years. Establishing a new city
The city that is now San Jose was founded on November 29, 1777 as the first town in the new Spanish colony. It later became Alta California. The city was a farming community which was to support the Spanish military in San Francisco and Monterey. When California became a state in 1850, San Jose was the first capital. At this time, it was still largely an agricultural center.
In the 1950s and 1960s, there was rapid expansion in the area after the war. In the 1970s, the area was suddenly booming with Silicon Valley's growing importance. More business came to the area, establishing it as a technology town.
San Jose is located on the San Andreas Fault line, and sometimes suffers from earthquakes. Like the rest of the Bay area, San Jose has a Mediterranean climate, but unlike San Francisco, it is more arid. This is because San Francisco is surrounded by water on three sides, while San Jose is surrounded by mountains. It is more arid than other parts of the Bay Area.
