San Francisco Dining

If you like eating out, you're gong to love vacationing in San Francisco! San Fran has more restaurants per capita than any other US city, making it the tastiest town around! Practically every ethnic and international cuisine is represented here in San Francisco including Afghan, Vietnamese, Polish and even Indian delicacies. Great tasting food, beautiful views and affordable prices await you in San Francisco, so be sure to come over hungry! In this section of the San Francisco Travel Guide, Super Cheap has taken the time to provide you with a short overview of some great restaurants, along with a few helpful pointers for enjoying the Bay Area dining scene. Feel free to check it out before reserving your next San Francisco car rental, or print out a copy for your next night on the town - just be warned, if you're hungry, you may wish to skip the following information!

San Francisco Travel Guide Dining Favorites

  • Hayes Street Grill - 320 Hayes St.
One of the best seafood joints around, the Hayes Street Grill is definitely a must-visit for vacationers looking to enjoy a little ocean cuisine! Delicacies at this diner including Pacific blue nose, harpoon-caught swordfish and loads of succulent shrimp, all of which are served alongside thin and crispy french-fries. If you've managed to save a little extra room after the main course, Super Cheap recommends ordering the restaurant's legendary crme brle for desert - it's like heaven... for your mouth!
  • Charanga - 2351 Mission St.
If you're looking to save money during your next vacation, Super Cheap highly recommends that you add the Charanga restaurant to your San Francisco travel plans! This exceptional restaurant specializes in an "eclectic mix of Caribbean-inspired" dishes, many of which fall into the $10 to $14 price range! Set in a cozy dining room of exposed brick, the Charanga restaurant on Mission Street is the perfect hangout for friends and family, so be sure to check it out on your upcoming trip!
  • Caf Claude - 7 Claude La.
Located in the Financial District the Caf Claude bistro features a zinc bar, cinema posters and of course, unbelievably French food! The menu at Caf Claude includes delicacies like escargot and mussels marinire, along with a variety of tantalizing deserts and cheese platters. Reservations are essential at this classy caf so be sure to call them ahead of time at 415-392-3505.

Things to Know When Eating Out in San Francisco

If you've never eaten out in San Francisco it is important to keep the following information in mind:
  • The final tab at a San Francisco restaurant will include a food tax of 8.5%.
  • If you would like to smoke during your dinner, you will have to go outside - smoking is banned in all of the Bay Area's workplaces, including restaurants, so please take your cigarette outside.
  • Many of the upper-end establishments are proud to provide their visitors with valet parking - a service worth considering in many of the crowded areas of San Francisco! Union Square, the Civic Center and North Beach are three of the most crowed San Francisco neighborhoods, so be on the look-out for nominally priced valet establishments when dining out in these districts.
  • If you're interested in reserving a table at your favorite San Francisco restaurant, Super Cheap Car Rental suggests checking out the San Francisco Open Table reservation website at http://www.opentable.com/start.aspx?m=4. This site allows you to place a reservation at some 400 different restaurants in the San Francisco area, helping you to save valuable time and energy during your trip.
  • Remember to be adventurous during your San Francisco travel time - dine outside the box! Many of the city's most popular restaurants are located within the heavily visited districts of San Fran - but just because they're popular doesn't mean they're the absolute best! Great San Francisco restaurants are also located in the more distant districts, like the Haight-Ashbury quarter and Sunset, so be sure to check them out during your Bay Area vacation!
