What its all about
The Sigmund Stern Grove was presented to the City of San Francisco in 1931 by Rosalie Meyer Stern in honor of her husband Sigmund Stern. The SGF is held in a beautiful, natural amphitheater at the major intersection of 19th Avenue (one of The City's main westerly thoroughfares on which San Francisco State University is located) and Sloat Boulevard (which leads to the San Francisco Zoo at The Great Highway along the Pacific Coast). Marveling at the Grove's natural acoustics, Mrs. Stern determined that the site would be preserved as a park in which the public could enjoy admission-free music, dance, and theater performances. On June 4, 1932, Stern Grove was dedicated. Two weeks later, the San Francisco Symphony played the first concert in the Grove. Mrs. Stern, then President of the San Francisco Recreation Commission, formed the non-profit Stern Grove Festival Association in 1938, stipulating that all concerts were to be free to the public and designed for everyone's enjoyment.

All about the music
Around those three attractions, many musical genres are booked, with a definite slant toward so-called World Music the last few years. For a couple of decades or so, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band played the Sunday closest to the Fourth of July, but several years ago - as that grew a bit stale - the tradition was changed in favor of variety.
Around the corner
Since youre in the area with your San Francisco rental car at the Stern Grove Festival you should definitely take a trip to see the Golden Gate Park. It is a large urban park consisting of 1,017 acres of public grounds. Configured as a rectangle, it is similar in shape but 20% larger than Central Park in New York, to which it is often compared. With 13 million visitors annually, Golden Gate is the third most visited city park in the United States. There are several features including the Kezar Stadium, the Conservatory of Flowers, AIDS Memorial Grove, the Music Concourse Area, De Young Museum, San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum, Japanese Tea Garden, Academy of Sciences and so much more.
