The Tenderloin is one of the harder neighborhoods to define. But it is commonly said to be bordered on the North by Post Street, on the East by Taylor and 6th Streets, on the South by Mission Street, and on the West by Van Ness and 9th Streets. The Tenderloin doesnt really have the best rap in San Francisco. It is probably best well known for its homelessness, crime, drug sales, prostitution, strip clubs and its countless liquor stores. However, it does offer some of the most affordable rents and is in very close proximity to the Financial District and the Civic Center. The residents are mainly composed mainly of artists, writers and the working-class. The Tenderloin originated after the 1906 Earthquake, when several hotels were built to house the victims of the disaster. However, after the wealthier refugees had moved, the abandoned hotels were turned into low-income housing and so began what would be San Franciscos underworld. The are several stories on the meaning of Tenderloin. Some say it is a reference to and old New york neighborhood with the same neighborhood characteristics while other people say that the dictionary definitions of the, soft underbelly is an analogy of the neighborhoods corruption. The most popular story is definitely the version in where a local police captain was said to only eat chuck steak but after becoming assigned to another part of a neighborhood he made so much money from bribes that he began eating tenderloin instead.

The neighborhood contains a wide variety of ethnically diverse people of all ages. Today, the Tenderloin consists mainly of middle class families and recent immigrants of Southeast Asian and Latin American descent. Unfortunately, a large number of homeless people and people living in extreme poverty call the Tenderloin their home as well. The neighborhood is also overrun with social service agencies and some Edwardian apartment buildings. The Glide Memorial Church on Ellis and Taylor Street provides one of the largest social service programs and has been for over 40 years. They serve over 1 000 000 meals a year to the neighborhoods homeless and poor.

For some oriental fare, Thai House Express at Geary and Larkin and OSHA Thai Noodle at Geary and Leavenworht are highly recommended. Olive Bar, 743 Larkin and OFarrell one of the Tenderloins more upscale bars makes one of the best martinis in San Francisco and serve complimentary olives as well.
Edinbrugh Castle, Geary and Polk a Scottish-themed pub, it has several literary events as well as serving authentic fish & chips with great beer.
