Initially located in San Franciscos Mission District, the Mexican Museum can now be found in Building D of the prestigious Fort Mason Center. Created in 1975 by local artist Peter Rodriguez, the Mexican Museum showcases the aesthetic expression of numerous generations of Mexican and Mexican-American people. Dedicated to providing people with an outlet to experience the complexity and richness of Latino art throughout the Americas, the Mexican Museum is includes influential artworks by Latino, Mexican and Chicano artists. Over the past thirty years the museum has amassed a collection of over 12,000 objects, each of which holds a special significance in both historical and present contexts. A unique facet of the San Francisco landscape, the Mexican Museum includes Pre-Conquest, Colonial, Popular, Modern and Contemporary works covering a wide range of mediums and styles. Although the Mexican Museum is currently housed in the Fort Mason Center, it will soon be on the move again, taking up a permanent residence inside a brand new building at the heart of San Franciscos Yerba Buena arts district. Located at the corner of Mission and 3rd Streets, the new state-of-the-art facility will increase the Mexican Museums square footage six-fold, allowing museum curators to expand the gallery space, educational facilities and technological capabilities. Facilities inside the new building will include a community multi-purpose room as well as enlarged collection display rooms and tons of new exhibition room. The new building, which was designed by internationally recognized Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, will feature 63,000 square feet of space over a seven floors. Two sub-floors will be dedicated to permanent collection storage, while the other space will feature classrooms, exhibition preparation areas and an educational orientation site. Changing exhibitions will be located on the second and third floors, while the fourth floor will house office space. Corporate rentals and special events will take place on the new buildings penthouse floor, and dont forget to check out the museums popular gift shop, which will be located in the new buildings atrium and lobby.
