San Francisco Rent a Car and Transamerica Pyramid

The City of San Francisco is currently home to a wide variety of architectural wonders including expansive bridges, skyscraping towers and stunning Art Deco buildings. But what about the Pyramid! The Transamerica Pyramid, which is located at the heart of the San Franciscos Montgomery Financial District, is one of the nations most highly recognized buildings, symbolizing the citys innovative atmosphere and unwavering strength. A pivotal part of the Transamerica Insurance & Investment Group California sector (it includes both the Transamerica Redwood Park as well as the Two Transamerica Center), the Transamerica Pyramid is creatively unconventional, encompassing nearly an entire city block along Montgomery Street. Designed to imitate the natural lighting effects of nearby trees, the Transamerica Pyramid showcases an open environment that is both functional and fresh, earning it a place amongst the great architectural wonders of San Francisco. Today the building continues t stand as a source of great pride for both the Transamerica Company as well as the city of San Francisco so dont forget to stop by and check it out during your upcoming car rental San Francisco vacation!

Interesting Facts about the Transamerica Pyramid

  • The Transamerica Pyramid was considered to be the tallest building in the United States (west of the Mississippi) until the Aon Center was built in Los Angeles in 1974.
  • Components of the buildings base include approximately 16,000 cubic yards of concrete which were used to encase more than 300 miles of steel reinforcement rods. The building also features an excavation depth of nearly 52 feet making it one of the sturdiest buildings in San Francisco.
  • The largest floor of the building is that of the 5th and features nearly 21,025 square feet. The 48th floor is the smallest with just 2,025 square feet. This top floor is a tenants-only conference room complete with 360 degree views of the city landscape and neighboring San Francisco Bay.

Designed by President Beckett and the architectural company of William L. Pereira & associates, the Transamerica Pyramid continues to dominate the San Francisco skyline, measuring in at just over 853 feet (or 260 meters). An exquisite mixing of ancient architecture and modern technology, the Transamerica Pyramid is certified to withstand all sorts of naturally occurring trauma, including mid-grade earthquakes like the 7.1 magnitude quake which struck the city in 1989! Other important structural details of the Transamerica Pyramid include the concrete wings near the buildings top (one houses an elevator while the other supports a stairwell and smoke tower), the buildings exterior quarts-aggregated panels (which house reinforced connecting rods at four places on every floor), and the buildings spire which is covered with vertically louvered aluminum panels. The Transamerica Building also boasts over 3,678 windows. It takes window washers an entire month to clean them all.

Car rental San Francisco travelers are highly encouraged to visit this exciting west coast landmark during their upcoming Super Cheap vacation as it boats one of the worlds most innovative designs and versatile designs. Thanks to the four cameras located atop the buildings Virtual Observation Deck, visitors can watch live-feed video programming of the surrounding area 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!

The Transamerica Pyramid is now prominently displayed across the country and around the world as the logo of the Transamerica Insurance & Investment Group logo, but nothing beats seeing it right close up!
