Death Valley National Park
Travel time from downtown Los Angeles: Approximately 6 hours
Approximate California Cheap Car Rental Driving Distance: 300 miles (one way)
Death Valley National Park covers almost 3 thousand square miles of natural habitat and is a vast outdoors museum, larger that the Yellowstone National Park! Established on February 11th in 1933, Death Valley is named after the floor of the valley, which is almost 300 feet below sea level! It is recognized as the lowest point in the entire Western Hemisphere and also as one of the hottest places on the planet! In 1913 a temperature of 133 degree Fahrenheit was recorded at the Badwater basin, right in the midst of the valley. This unique park is open all year round, but many people suggest visiting it during the winter months. During the long, hot summer months (from May through to October) Death Valley is hardly the place to take your kids for a picnic! Many of the side roads that lead down into the Valley are closed to your cheap rental car during this time of year due to the intense heat and safety issues, but you will be able to visit the higher and cooler Panamint Mountains.
Ghost Towns of Death Valley
Looking for something a little out of the ordinary during your cheap car rental road trip? Be sure to check out the Ghost Towns located at Death Valley. Death Valley has a fascinating mining history, with the first minors to pass through there dating way back to 1849 during the California gold rush. These minors didn't stop to mine in the Valley, and did they ever miss out on some rich deposits of gold and borax in the mountains surrounding the Valley, and the Valley's floor itself. But by the late 19th century the mining industry was in full swing within the Valley. There are over 30 ghost towns within and near the Death Valley, and are in excellent shape due to the dry, arid temperature that they reside in, (the Valley records an average of only 1.65 inches of rain per year!) and because of the protection they receive from vandals by the Board of National Parks.
