Los Angeles Travel Guide LA car rentals are a definite must when traveling in the city of Los Angeles, California. Los Angeles is a city based on cars and travel via cars, connected by 6,500 miles of streets and 160 miles of freeways. The city is connected via well maintained freeways that can get confusing if you do not know your way around. Driving in Los Angeles does require patience, especially during the morning rush hour (7:00 A.M - 9:00 A.M), and the evening rush hour (4:00 P.M - 6:00 P.M). However, Loss Angeles still can be a great place to drive; in fact the longest street in Los Angeles is Sepulveda Boulevard, stretching a total of 76 miles through Los Angeles County from the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach.
If you are a visitor in Los Angeles and over 18 years old and have a valid driver license from your home state or country, you may drive in the state of California as long as your home state license remains valid. Seat belts are required to be worn by all drivers and passengers, including any passenger who is age six or older and weighs over 60 lbs. A child passenger restraint system is required for any child who is under the age of six and weighs 60 pounds or less.
The speed limits in the city are rather well marked, and always base your speed on those signs, but for a guideline: maximum speeds within city limits are usually 25 MPH, highways are 55 MPH, and freeways are 65 MPH.
There is a significant amount of parking available within the city. There is free street parking but this usually requires some good luck, especially around dinner times in busy areas of the city. Some restaurants do offer valet parking, which is sometimes free, but is often a paid service. Make sure to read all the signs very carefully so that you do not get ticketed. There are signs that will warn you of things such as street cleaning hours, no parking during certain hours and residents-only parking zones. A red curb always means no parking, and a green curb means parking is allowed, but only for a limited amount of time. A white curb means that stopping is allowed but only for loading and unloading passengers. There are approximately 41,000 meters throughout the city. The meters usually take quarters so make sure to bring some along. In addition to meters, there are approximately 116 off-street City parking lots with over 7,500 spaces.
