Rent A Car In Los Angeles and the UCLA Hammer Museum

Operated by the University of California in Los Angeles, the Hammer Museum is committed to promoting cross-cultural understanding and promoting artists past and present. The Hammer Museum is here to promote the human experience through art. Although it covers art through the centuries, it has a social focus on the art of our time. At the center of its philosophy is the belief that art plays a role in culture and society. When you visit with your rent a car in Los Angeles, you will have the opportunity to explore art in many forms.

Started with a dream

The Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Culture Centre opened in November 1990. The museum was financed by Occidental Petroleum Corporation and opened next to its headquarters in Westwood. At the time when it opened, it featured Dr. Hammer's collections and also had galleries for traveling exhibitions. When Hammer died three weeks after the museum opened, construction stopped and the building was never completed.

In 1992, the museum began negotiations with the university to assume management of the museum. As you may learn while you are here with your rent a car in Los Angeles, the university took over in 1995 and also assumed responsibility for the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden on the UCLA campus.

Today, as you will see when you visit with your rent a car in Los Angeles, the museum has grown to present to you contemporary and historical works in all forms of visual media. In addition to a permanent collection, temporary exhibitions and Hammer projects are also featured here.

Planning your visit

When you visit with your rent a car in Los Angeles, you will want to go to the northeast corner of Westwood and Wilshire Boulevards in Westwood Village. The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.; Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.; and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and UCLA Alumni Association Members with ID, and free for museum members, students with ID, and visitors under 17 accompanied by an adult. It is also free for everyone on Thursdays.

Tours of the museum are available from UCLA docents, who will use age-appropriate teaching methods while you are here. You, as a group, with have the opportunity to see special exhibitions, permanent collections, the sculpture garden, or other museum selections. All tours are conducted between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. They normally last for about 45 minutes. Please get there 15 minutes early. To tour the Sculpture Garden, please call ahead for reservations. Self-guided tours are also available.
